Episode 84. What is Pickleball & Can I Play it with My Grandchildren?

Carl Landau, the co-author of Pickleball for Dummies, says the sport has a world-wide, multigenerational following, with more than 5 million players and counting.

Playing pickleball is fun way to meet fun-loving people and put an extra pep in your step … all in the name of having more energy for your grandchildren and even playing a game or two with them.

What is pickleball? Carl says it looks a lot like tennis on a miniature court with much less running, which is great if your knees don’t like that sort of thing. Playing pickleball is a safe option for getting more fresh air and definitely way more fun than using an elliptical at the gym.

Carl is with us today to explain why people love to play pickleball, how and where to play, and the proper body mechanics for safe and effective play. He also will explain the fine art of “dinking.”

Please join me in welcoming Carl to the podcast!

Episode 77. Sweet Treats Make Grand Memories

John Zeno Louizes is a third generation candymaker and the Head Honcho at Zeno’s Boardwalk Sweet Shop. He took over the family business in 2003 and has grown it to include four candy retail shops and three ice cream shops. The brick-and-mortar stores are in Florida, but a bustling online candy store means the confections are available nationwide.
John, who began working at the store when he was 11, says, “My goal is to make sure we do the best candy making in the world and have fun doing so.”  John and I chat about the candy business and why candy and ice cream stores are great places for grandparents and grandchildren to make sweet memories.
Be sure to visit the store’s website to watch videos of John and his crew making candy and ice cream.

Episode 70 of the Adventures with Grammy Podcast is a rebroadcast of Episode 1, which features my sister discussing the skip-gen cross-country trip she and her husband and two grandchildren took in their RV. The first stop on their adventures was the life-size replica of Noah’s Ark in Northern Kentucky not too far from Cincinnati, home of The Ark’s sister museum, the Creation Museum.

Exciting for 2022 is children 10 and under enjoy free admission to the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum, and as long as one adult is in the group, there’s no limit to how many children you can bring for free.

My mother just returned from a bus trip to both museums her Senior Citizens Group sponsored. Mom thoroughly enjoyed her visit. I, too, am looking forward to visiting the Ark.

Please enjoy this episode about traveling with grandchildren.

Episode 68 is a rebroadcast of Episode 12 of the Adventures with Grammy Podcast. This episode features Mehreen Tenvir, who is known as Mom at the Museum on Instagram.

This rebroadcast is timely because museums across the United States are opening their doors once again and welcoming visitors despite the ongoing threat of COVID.

A former docent for the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., Mehreen Tanvir shows us how to turn trips to museums into enjoyable learning adventures for children and adults. She carries a “bag of wonders” with her when she and her children visit a museum, and she reinforces the art they view by reading children’s books written about artists and their art. She says there is a strong correlation between art, music and children’s literature. They also says museum gift shops are her children’s favorite stops.

Located in south central Kentucky, you’ll find gently rolling hillsides, underground rivers, caves, ziplines and covered wagons in which to rest your head.
